Cadet Flights For all those who have ever dreamed of flying, or wanted to give someone else the opportunity, you've landed at the right spot. Introduce yourself or someone special to the art and science of flying. After a preflight briefing (learning the basics of what makes an airplane fly), you'll climb aboard one of our Varga VG-21s (the same aircraft used for our Air Combat dogfights). A brief cockpit orientation follows, and then you take to the skies. No pilot's license and no previous experience are necessary. |
Your assigned pilot will be in the front cockpit, you will be in the back cockpit. You probably will be able to do the first takeoff yourself with guidance from your pilot. Then learn how to maneuver the aircraft through turns, climbs, glides and more. You then fly the aircraft back to the airport for a landing. We offer ride lengths of 30 and 60 minutes. You choose the length you want. The longer you fly, the more you get to do. Flights times are the actual time in the air. Allow extra time for briefing (takes about 30 minutes), loading, taxiing and unloading. Click here to buy now or check out our prices. | |
| Reservations and Limitations | |
| Maximum weight: 230 pounds. Maximum height: about 6'3". Minimum age: Probably around 10 years old. Reservations are required for all flights. We generally fly from 11:00 AM until dark every day except Mondays, July 4th, Thanksgiving and Christmas. It's best to call about a week in advance to get the time you want. However, last minute scheduling is sometimes possible. Call 1-800-SKY-LOOP (1-800-759-5667) to reserve your flight. Please call one hour before your flight to be sure the weather is cooperating. Plan on arriving 30 minutes before your scheduled departure. That will give you time to fill out a short waiver form that is required for all passengers. And, you'll have time for pictures before you takeoff. Tickets are good for six months from date of purchase. We have a 30-day refund policy. All refunds are subject to a 10% service fee. Beyond 30 days of purchase, there are no refunds for any reason. Please call 24 hours in advance if you can not make your scheduled departure. There are no refunds or reschedules for "no shows" and for cancellations with less than the required 24 hours notice. We will reschedule your flight if there is a cancellation due to weather. | |
| About Our Cadet First Flight Aircraft | |
| Our aircraft are propeller-driven Varga VG-21s. They have excellent climb and turning performance, and room for two pilots in tandem seating with dual joystick controls. The assigned pilot sits in the front seat with access to the radios and fuel selectors. The cadet pilot sits in the rear seat. You can do almost all of the flying, maybe even the takeoff (30 or 60 minute flights) and landing (60 minute flights) under the supervison of your pilot. The aircraft you will be flying was first designed by Douglas Aircraft Corporation test pilot Bill Morrisey. This was after WWII, and it was called the Morrisey Nifty. Later the design was sold to a company called Shinn, and modified to its present all-metal, tricycle gear configuration. Finally, the design was sold to Varga in Chandler AZ. Varga produced the 2150A model. Manufacturing stopped in the mid '80s, although there are rumors that a new firm may start building the aircraft again. The US Navy and the Air Force bought and flew variants of the design. A number of the aircraft are flying in military colors. One of our aircraft was operated by the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland. The other was recently restored by our mechanic. He also works on Unlimited Class air racers that are flown at the National Air Races in Reno. | |
